Auto D’Elegance Oktoberfest a Success

The “Beauties” were not long legged glamorous models, but rather exotic vintage racing cars, and the “Brats” were not spoiled kids but delicious grilled German Bratwurst.

On Saturday afternoon, September 9, Santa Cruz Symphony League members and guests enjoyed our third Auto d’Elegance, this time with an Oktoberfest twist. This was a fundraiser for the Santa Cruz Symphony. Kevin Monahan took some terrific photos--click here for the full slideshow.

Canepa in Scotts Valley hosted the event. Guests toured Bruce Canepa’s collection of gorgeous classic cars, including a racing car with four front wheels that turn in unison, a vintage racing 1959 Austin-Healey “Bugeye” Sprite, and two beautiful vintage Austin-Healeys. The many racing Porsches on display include several that Canepa has raced.  John Ficarra led a guided tour through the spotless workshops where numerous cars are being restored.

Participants enjoyed a beautiful day with delicious grilled bratwurst, German red cabbage, and potato salad.  Wine and, of course, German beer were included. The Zicke Zacke German/Swiss band, complete with accordion and lederhosen, played Oktoberfest tunes.

Live auction items included a week in a Maui condo, and a scenic plane ride from Watsonville to Half Moon Bay with lunch.  Roger Knacke, the organizer and chair of the event, was also the auctioneer. Cheryl Hammond, Vickie Rutan, Eileen Sambrailo, and helpers staffed the entrance table.

The League would like to thank the generous sponsors Roland and Pat Rebele, Eileen Sambrailo, Julie and Bob Mazurek, Brooke Margrave of Stevens Creek Porsche, Linda and Dwayne Downing, Linda Burroughs Real Estate, Robert Davidson of Canyon View Capital, and DeLaveaga Service Center. Jerold O’Brien donated Silver Mountain wines; Matt Kannely of Couch distributers donated German beers.

Special thanks to our hosts Bruce Canepa and the Canepa Team. Mary Ann and Peter Orr and their helpers prepared the barbecue.  Many others donated or helped with the many tasks that go into such an event. Finally, the League thanks all who attended and supported our wonderful Santa Cruz Symphony.
