Concert Preview - Catharsis

The Santa Cruz Symphony will start off the year 2020 with Mahler’s Symphony no. 5, which begins with the most famous four notes since Beethoven’s 5th; this marvelous work includes Mahler’s greatest love song, the Adagietto, and charts the course from inner agony to ecstasy of the soul.

At the Santa Cruz Symphony League’s preview, we will enjoy a wonderful Buffet Luncheon at 11:30 AM, and later welcome Maestro Daniel Stuart to guide us through the brilliant music that we are sure to encounter during the upcoming weekend.

Concert Preview - Metamophoses

The Santa Cruz Symphony will follow up the first concert of the year with Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5., in “Metamorphoses”.

The concert will open with Moncayo’s Huapango which celebrates zapateado dance traditions of Mexico, while Massenet’s breathtakingly beautiful Meditation from Thais and Saint-Saëns’ thrillingly virtuosic Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso will feature Klein String Competition winner Alex Zhou.

At the Santa Cruz Symphony League’s preview, we will enjoy a wonderful Socia at 4 PM, and furthermore welcome Maestro Daniel Stuart and Soloist for the symphonic weekend, Alex Zhou, who will introduce us to the mastery of Prokofiev.

Concert Preview - Rapture

And here we are again, having reached the end of another wonderful season of Santa Cruz Symphony music, with “Rapture”.

Music of Lully, Denza, Vivaldi, and Orff will be presented to our classical music fans during this “last hurrah” of the season. To end the season with a bang, Orff’s awe-inspiring masterpiece returns by popular demand! The electrifying power of this musical journey around the wheel of fortune is legendary, and will continue Maestro Stewart’s tradition of featuring world renowned soloists from the Metropolitan Opera, and the beloved Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus.

At the Santa Cruz Symphony League’s concert preview, we will enjoy a relaxing Socia at 4 PM, after which Maestro Daniel Stuart and the Soloists for the symphonic weekend will join us for an introductory stroll through the musical programming for the weekend.

Fiddle Music Magic with Nigel Armstrong & Mads Tolling

Nigel Armstrong, Concertmaster of the Santa Cruz Symphony, is emerging as a dynamic and creative artist both within and beyond the realm of classical music. Nigel enjoys playing “fiddle music” of various sorts …exploring different traditions of musical expression such as jazz, fiddle, and tango; Nigel will be showing off this new passion through a benefit event for the Santa Cruz Symphony League, hosted by Kuumbwa Jazz Center.

Joining Nigel at this event is Mads Tolling, an internationally renowned violinist, composer, and two-time Grammy Award-winner from Denmark.As a classical violinist, Mads discovered his passion for American music at the age of 14 when his father gave him a Miles Davis cassette tape that changed his life forever.

Garden of Note

Here’s your chance to stroll through 5 acres of lush gardens while enjoying beautiful music and light refreshments. Richard Klevins and Gay Nichols are opening their spectacular gardens on Saturday, May 18th from 2 to 5 PM as a benefit for the Symphony League.

This spectacular property is in the hills off Larkin Valley Road. There are many paths you can meander, the flowers will be at their peak, and the Koi pond will entrance you. The garden features over 200 roses that are fragrant, disease resistant, and continual blooming.

Tickets are just $40, and include light refreshments, a complimentary beverage, and the opportunity to enjoy music in the gardens.
